Layoffs, Lost Potential and Advice for Beancounters

First off, if you haven’t already heard, The Spokesman-Review (my current employer) laid off about 25 people from the newsroom Wednesday (read about it here). But wait, there’s more: a handful of unknown managers are also expected to be let go in the coming weeks, Editor-in-Chief Steve Smith resigned and, oh yeah, I happen to be one of the lucky 25.

Life lived in the Cone of Silence

What I’ve learned in the last few weeks at work is to just keep your head down. Keep doing your work and ignore the fires around you.

Change is a commin, but rumors brew faster than change. As rumors acting as rumors do, they are fantastic and are exciting – very much like a fairy tale that you were led to believe was true as a child.

Eventually reality will hit. Santa Clause is not real and the fairy tale will die. The question becomes do you want to live the lie and embrace the possibility, or do you want to keep doing your thing in the middle of traffic and risk getting hit by a car.
